I'm one of those "indie-films-or-bust" type of people (with my favorite movies ranging from Amelie to the Darjeeling Limited), so when I saw the preview for Drillbit Taylor, it was an immediate turn-off for me.
Drillbit Taylor was released by Paramount Pictures on March 21, 2008. Upon release, the film received mixed to negative reviews mainly toward the screenwriting and the direction but praised the humor, Wilson's performance and the chemistry between the cast.

Drillbit Taylor is basically about two high-school freshmen who are being bullied and harassed at their new school. They make an appointment through the internet, looking for an inexpensive bodyguard.
Their best response – and the cheapest – comes from Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his luck soldier of fortune who lives a homeless – he likes to say "home-free" – existence on the beach. He enrolls them in some physical and mental training.
Filkins is then arrested and taken back to his parents in Hong Kong, and Drillbit taken to the hospital, then prison. Three weeks later, Taylor is out of prison and celebrating with the boys and Lisa. After the credits, Taylor is seen working in the school as a nurse.

Drillbit Taylor has some genuine laughs and a solid message of the importance of friendship and courage.
